How Quickly Can An Everett Motorcycle Accident Happen?

Posted on : October 28, 2015Posted By : Russell HillPosted In : Motorcycle Accident

A few days ago, one of our team members at Russell and Hill had a frightening experience on a motorcycle.

The sun was shining, the leaves were turning, and it was the perfect day for a ride! While traveling at speed limit down one of the beautiful twisting back roads surrounding the Everett area, our team member rounded a bend and noticed a car approaching.

The car drove over some branches that were scattered on the highway from a recently downed tree. A large branch, almost as thick as the motorcyclist’s wrist, was kicked up into the air by the car, sending it flying toward the motorcyclist’s head. It missed her by only a few centimeters.

Had she been struck by the flying branch, our team member, at best, would have sustained some very extensive bruising. Had she lost control of her bike as a result of the impact, she could have sustained serious injuries, such as head injuries, internal injuries, broken limbs, or worse.

Every Second Count

The shocking element of our story is that it all unfolded in under five seconds. The most tragic scenarios often unfold in a matter of moments, so it’s important for drivers of both motorcycles and other vehicles to be are aware of their surroundings and be cautious on the road. Should you be involved in a motorcycle accident, you will want a qualified and experienced attorney to aid you in pursuing compensation for your damaged property and injuries

Caution on the Road

In order for motorcyclists to be safe on Everett roads, it is important that all drivers are sensitive and attentive to their surroundings. There are several key efforts that motorcyclists and other drivers should make to prevent a motorcycle accident.

Motorcyclists

It is a well-known fact that riding a motorcycle is incredibly fun. However, no matter how fun this may be, it is critical for motorcyclists to remain intentional about driving the speed limit and avoiding putting themselves in dangerous situations. Speeding and passing other vehicles might be fun and easy, but it puts you and other drivers at risk.

There are other steps you can take to ensure that you are visible and safe:

  • Helmet: Be sure to wear a helmet whenever you jump on your bike.
  • Leathers: Wearing leathers is also an important way to protect your body and skin, should you ever end up sliding across the pavement.
  • Headlight: Having your headlight on during all hours of the day will help you stay visible to other drivers on the road.

Other Vehicles

All drivers on the highways share the responsibility to obey speed limits and the traffic laws. Be aware of your surroundings by keeping an eye on your rear and side-view mirrors as you drive, change lanes, and make turns.

Avoid following a motorcyclist too closely. If there is a motorcycle behind you, leave ample room between you and the car in front of you to increase your response time to potential road hazards. The more space you can offer yourself and a motorcyclist, the more time you have to analyze and respond to dangerous situations. Remember, every second count.
