Pedestrian crash leads to DUI arrest
On May 24, 2020, a pedestrian was struck as he tried to cross lanes of traffic on Evergreen Way south of 112th street. The victim in this crash was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center. In this case, there was no crosswalk where the pedestrian attempted to cross the highway.
The vehicle that struck the pedestrian continued north and pulled into the parking lot of the nearby AM/PM store. There was heavy damage to the windshield of the vehicle, and Everett police were able to make contact with the driver. After the driver failed sobriety tests, they were arrested and charged with driving under the influence. A detective with the Everett police Traffic Safety Unit was dispatched to the scene to help investigate the pedestrian versus car portion of the incident.
Pedestrian crash statistics and injuries
Data available from the Washington Department of Transportation indicates that there were 2,277 total pedestrian crashes across the state during the latest reporting year. Out of these incidents, there were more than 2,000 injuries and 102 fatalities.
Pedestrians are very susceptible to severe injuries in the event they are involved in an accident with a traditional passenger vehicle. It is not uncommon for pedestrians to incur the following injuries in these crashes:
- Spinal cord trauma with possible paralysis
- Traumatic brain injuries or open head wounds
- Broken or dislocated bones
- Internal organ damage or internal bleeding
- Severe lacerations or amputation injuries
Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are often caused by the negligence of drivers on the roadway. This can include, like the case mentioned above, drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. This can also include drivers distracted by their cell phones or other devices, operating too fast for conditions, as well as a general failure to obey traffic laws.
